Following the publication of her new collection, but for this mess, we sit down this week with the Spokane-based poet Cara Lorello to talk about her work and her identity as a “day-job” poet.
The new book is out through Finishing Line Press and contains 57 poems that Cara has been working on over the past two decades. Some are recent and some have undergone multiple revisions in that time.
Cara explains how but for this mess continues some of the motifs and preoccupations of her first chapbook, but at least you’re beautiful (2022). She also discusses the influence that Spokane’s writing and performance poetry community has had on her work.
Before a Lightning Round debate on Freaky Friday versus Groundhog Day, Cara reads the closing poem from but for this mess, “As Your Eurydice.”
